Andamlak Belihu and Tsehay Gemechu to Defend Delhi Half Marathon Titles SundayBy Adam Kopet Hagos Gebrhiwet of Ethiopia is set to make his half marathon debut Sunday at the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon Gebrhiwet has been a force on the track, earning three global medals at 5,000 meters. His best of 12:45.82 ranks him fifth on the all-time performer list. He also holds a best of 26:48.95 for 10,000 meters, good for 19th on the all-time performer list. Now Gebrhiwet will take his efforts to the roads of the half marathon distance. The Delhi Half Marathon, often a winter fixture, has been moved up to October to avoid the winter smog in New Delhi. The 2018 Delhi Half Marathon champions, Andamlak Belihu and Tsehay Gemechu, both of Ethiopia, return to defend their titles. Belihu finished fifth in the 10,000 meters at the IAAF World Outdoor Championships earlier this month. His 59:18 winning time from last year is a personal best. Gemechu won the 2018 Delhi Half Marathon in her half marathon debut. She ran a course record 1:06:50. Most recently, she finished fourth int he 5,000 meters at the IAAF World Outdoor Championships. There are seven men in the field who have run under 60 minutes for the half marathon. Five women have run 1:07:16 or better in the race. |
